The WORST CLASS of tourists

This page would not go down easy for “others”. Their rude behavior, their loud noise pollution, their disgusting habit, etc, are some of the many “scenes” that I have witness. Who are they; they considered themselves as the “mighty power rangers” in the Asia right now. “Chixx”.

Chapter one; my first encounter was in the Thailand, Suvarnabhumi Airport. Due to my job, I have to travel very often and last minute. I took Airasia Thailand back to Singapore, a mistake I shall never make twice. Most budget airline would only let you check in one hour or two before the flight time. As I was queuing in the line, the “barbarian” appeared in groups of 20s starts jumping queue. Their mentality was that; hey I have one country-man in the queue, lets us join in in-front of him and ignored the rest in queue. Well, all the 19 mother-fuckers starting jumping in. Never mind the passengers are queuing behind; never mind their passports & lug gages are still not ready, just get inline of the queue first. So where are their lug gages or rather their 1 year supply of ration? It is at the back of the queue and they expect the airport employees to carry for them! Cartons of oranges, carton of fruits, carton of instant noodles, bags of clothing (bags so big that you can hide a child inside), bottles of waters, who knows wtf they are thinking. When the airport employee told them that the lug gages are over-weight, they tried to eat some of the oranges on the spot. It was funny at first looking at those “village men” gobble down the oranges until you see those mother-fuckers start throwing the orange’s skin on the floor and use the bottles of water to wash their hands openly. NO FUCKING SHAME. Airport employee tried to stop them from dirtying their airport asked them to throw away their rubbish at the bin. Their replied – one fucking care less look and carrying on doing it. Security guards had to call in. After they are done with their nonsense, they repack their oranges in their luggage. So what happens to the original cartons? They dump in right there, no intention of throwing it in the rubbish, no intention of clearing it away, just left there and expect some Good Samaritan would removed it for them. WTF are they thinking, you came as a tourists, spending money in the country and finally leaving shit the airport!?! Wonder if they ever flush the toilet after they shit or just walk away.

Reason 2 why I would not take Airasia Thailand again. Finally about to board the plane, queue again. This time is bad, not only Chixxmen jumped queue, they dashed and pushed their way, like cattle cows. No security guards to help now, the Airasia employees hardly could control the crowd. Someone should tell those “cows” that the plane is not going to take off without them. I was pissed that I fucking push them back right at their face. Airasia Thailand’s employee did not even check my pass when I went through the gate. How convenient.

Reason 3 why I would not take Airasia Thailand again. For budget airline, is free seating. Got a seat near the exit. The minute the plane takes-off; I wish I could parachute out the plane and swim back to Singapore. They talked so loud across the plane like they owned the entire plane; walk up and down, behaving like monkeys in the zoo. One even changed into pants openly. Those poor air stewardesses had such a hard time controlling these monkeys. One even agreed with me this is the worst flight ever. They hardly could set still through-out the flight. Telling them to sit still and be quiet is just like telling them that China is an eco- friendly country and cares for the enviroment. IMPOSSIBLE! Another highlight on board the plane is that Chixx-men never see instance noodles on plane before. One Chixx-man starts eating, 5 would crowd around him. Foods & drinks on board of budget airline are not FREE. Some Chixx wankers tried to order to food without paying, those free-loaders try to argue with the air stewardess even for a cup of coffee. Taking off shoes & socks on the plane, going to toilet without closing the doors are some of the many disgusting acts I witness through the freaking journey. 2 hours flights back to Singapore seem like an eternity. All I need is a parachute or …a M16 to shoot these mother fuckers down. Oh did I mention that they tried to use mobile phone on board of the plane?

When the plane finally touched down, the COWS are back to live. The plane is still in the moving and they are already trying to get their luggage. Air stewardess’s face is so black that charcoal seems to be whiter. The plane’s door open, they rush like there is no tomorrow. God bless that I made it alive to Singapore. I’m so glad that I live in Singapore. One could only imagine how are they going to host the Olympic? Is just like opening a can of worms but is for the world to see. You can bring a Chixx-man out to the city but you can’t bring a city out of a Chixx-man. “Made in China”, I will definitely stay away from this brand for now.

For some " weird & unexplained" reason I decided to check out my account with AdSense since I have not been blogging for the past 2 years. True enough, I have a small amout of 'token' pending and reason being pending is because I have moved house AGAIN and forgot to update my address. They have send a letter of payment released with the pin code to my old address.

Now I have to wait for another 3 - 4 weeks for the letter and another 3 - 4 weeks for the payment. Well, at least AdSense still generated $$ for me. Old school rocks.

Mr. Miyagi reveals my “dirty thought”

I’m been clean for 4 months (of course I cheated a few times), at the very minimum I can say I’m no longer a full-time smoker. I have to confess there is still this “dirty thought” inside my head that craved for a puff especially when I’m stressed out. This makes me wonder, how long it takes to kill every single nicotine molecule in my body. Am I going to be ‘dirty’ again?

I was reading an article (Men’s Health)written by Mr. Miyagi; I quit. What’s so interesting about this ex-smoker story is that it happened to all smokers, in a very detail and disturbing fact. Is a “been there, done that” phrase for all smokers. He literally illustrated the scene that we have shamefully did and played it all over in our face. *Ouch

when there aren’t any cigarettes left and for some reason you can’t go out and buy some in the next few hours – you pick all the stubs from the ashtray, mutter to yourself how fortunate you are to be a messy slob, because there always are stubs in the ashtray for a situation like this, and then light one of them up, being careful not to burn your fingers, take the one and only smokeable puff from it, throw it away and pick up the next stub to smoke. Until all the stubs are gone. Then you hunt around the house for other ashtrays.

Like I said it before, is always the weaker mind that surrenders. If you made up your mind that you do not need nicotine to ‘function’ like a normal human being, you would hardly even feel the urge monster wanking you inside -out you.
Quote ‘whatever the ‘method’ you use to quit smoking, it all boils down to whether you want to quit or not. Once you’ve really made up your mind, it becomes easier than you think.

For now, the battle between my “dirty thoughts” and my jedi’s mind is still on going. Hopefully the good will win and May the force be with me. Writing this post makes me feel like smoking again..

School bullies posted on YouTube

The worst part of this incident is that someone actually video it and post to YouTube. It clearly highlights that school bullies come from all age, genders and school. Not too sure how this school is treating this incident but it does indicate the seriousness of school bullies and may even consider as a juvenile crime. It is sad to know that Malaysia Goverment is taking this lightly and ignoring the fact that is happening in their own backyard.

CHINA Press reported a YouTube clip showing a bully slapping a schoolgirl for reporting about truancy.

The incident took place in a vacant classroom in Ipoh. The bully was heard asking the girl if the slap was hard enough.

The bully warned the girl that those who had skipped classes were her “people” and not to report the matter to the school.

The girl, who was silent, was seen weeping in the empty classroom which was guarded by two other girls.

MOE should draw out preventive methods to curb school bullies or this would happen to school in Singapore. The old punishments methods, detention, see the parents or counseling clearly do not work on this new-aged of students. There should be laws to govern against school bullies and should be action without hesitation just because of their age.

By far, this is the most captivating blog's name I have read. I have no idea who she’s is, what she does for a living but what she wrote does make sense (with a dose of wicked humor) As said in the header, this is a journal about a girl searching for man for her dream (charming). The is a very interesting blog.

Dear world, What’s up with this marriage thing? Why do women (especially Asian women) come with a use-by date of 29 years of age give or take a wrinkle or two.

I’m 25 years old this year. I’ve done the calculations. My friends are starting to remind me. I have two years to find the man of my dreams.One year to go out with him and make sure he is in actual fact ‘the man of my dreams’. And another lee-way year just in case I want to bail. Or he does.

The truth about reservist

Just came back from my 10 days reservist, which is nothing more than gathering with old friends, getting sun-burned, wasting time by waiting for who-knows-what. Another thing; do not expect any old reservist to wear an army uniform like a regular or NSFs. We always unbutton the top 2 buttons of our top and hardly even fold into no.4.

As my reservist cycles are coming to an end, I have noticed this particular ICT (In-camp-training) is slightly different. Some of the things that have changed are;

1) Old friends are losing hair early age.
2) Old friends are getting divorce then married (2 different girls)
3) Old friends are getting divorced (predictable)
4) Old friends are getting rounder like a pregnant woman, getting fatter as the year goes, totally disturbing (Fei G)
5) Fewer days out in the field and more time wasting by sleeping.

6) No camera mobile phone in camp is allowed(as long as you don't get caught, you are welcome to bring in digital cam)

Because of the relaxing training schedule for this reservist, I do look forward to my next year call-up. Hope it would be another waste of time like this.

PS; Biatch, Nike shoes are really not meant to carrying out long distance relationship with the owner. I just tear another pair of Nike shoes while I was running for 2.4km. I could have got Gold if is not because of that….. who knows.

Good Bye Joost and Hello Veoh

Finally got a chance to watch the movie Hostel 2, thank to Veoh. Not so great for part 2, never-the-less I do not have to wait for the released in Singapore and is free. The writer-director for the part 2 is Quentin Tarantina so imagine Kill Bill version but with more naked scene. I still prefer Hostel 1.

With Veoh, you get more new movies, more anime and a lot more soft porn. Similar concept as Bit Torrent but download time is much shorter (took me less than an hr to download the whole movie) and better viewing qualities too. Veoh also has a good mix of youtube concept, with short video clips submitted by users.

Are rich people mentally challenged or they just born stupid? To prove this theory, lets us look at Paris Hilton and the headline in today Straits Times 7 S’porean on yacht held in Kalimantan. One get in trouble on land the other get in trouble in sea but one thing is common about rich people; when they get bored of their life, they would get into trouble with the law and when they get caught, they would turn to their government for help. After all they pay more taxes than normal people, so they do get the privilege to be stupid.

I am sure yacht ‘strayed’ into Indonesia water...the GPS is not working, captain does not how to read map, moonsoon season and he just got his boat licence. Does he know that, besides getting clearance in Batam, a cruising licence is required to sail into Indonesia water. You can’t just happily sail your yacht out without approval, permit, and paper works just because your yacht name is ‘Sea Shaw’.

It is like when you are walking down the street when suddenly someone from the back taps on you, except this happens in the virtual world. I was doing my regular read on a famous blogger (DK) when I found out I got tag.

The mission of this 'tag' is to find a symbol that represents you. Seriously I can’t find any symbol that represent me, looks like me or any of my body parts. So I decided to use a symbol that correspond to my mood right now.

1) Recently I have decided to quit smoking and so far so good (1 month of clean lungs)
2) This symbol remind me to stop smoking.
3) I have seen this symbol since I picked up smoking, 13 years later it still around.
4) I used to find this symbol annoying but I do appreciate it now.
I guess the relationship with this symbol only apply to smokers; he/she see it is annoying but when a non-smoker see it, is no big deal. Small little symbol big signification.

I hope I got the tag thing right. Just wonder who is the originator that started the symbol thing?

May Day Concert and silly pictures

Got free tickets to watch May Day concert. Strange enough their concert is held at Singapore Expo, Max pavilion hall where Sunday service is held every week. I heard of May Day but don’t recall any of their songs. If you do not know May Day, just think of them as the Chinese version of Maroon 5. May Day = Maroon 5, this is what I was told. I have to say I do like the May Day, singing Hokkien songs and still look cool, not a lot of people can achieved that.

My 1st achievement in 2007

YES, I PASS MY IPPT TEST. One miserable week of training, one bad knee and one pair of lousy shoes I have accomplished a new achievement for 2007.

Must remember is always mind over body. Like what she said ‘2.4km is all about endurance’, coming from a female standpoint who never took 2.4km test. Amazing how she figured out.

2nd achievement to be confirmed. I have not smoke for a month. Keep it up, *pat on my shoulder.

2007 achievements still have a long way to go. Thinking of setting an 'achievement tab' in my blog to keep track.

No doubts the brand new Buddha Tooth Relic Temple at South Bridge Road is turning heads. The majestic building looks like from some fiction movies and makes you wonder who are the people living inside. It is amazing how this temple looks at night with, definitely another toursim attraction in Singapore. The night view of the temple does bring a new life to China Town.

Me, myself and my shitty challenges

It seems that I have not been writing about myself for quite awhile, too occupied with I.T, current affairs and ‘kaypoing’ posts. This would be a good time to start as I’m putting myself on 2 big challenges. 1st and the biggest challenge, QUITE SMOKING the other is IPPT test (again). For a start, I have not been smoking for 2 weeks (cool baby steps), no cutting down, nicotine patches or any hotline support, just bloody cold turkey. I really hope to succeed this time caused the last time only lasted for a month.

I still remember as a kid, I hate the smell of camel brand cigarettes but my grandfather loves it. He has no cancer, no pain no problem with his health. Until one night, he fell asleep and never work up. How I start out smoking is peer pressure during my secondary days, not that I regretting now but is really a test on individual. Smoking is really a tricky shit, Seriously!!! Your body depends on nicotine to function normally (especially if you have been smoking for more than 10 years) and also smoking has become part your lifestyle. You smoke in the morning, before/ after lunch and every single opportunity you could find. Having said that, I quit smoking is because I want to and I believed in mind over body. Why I smoke is because I want to and is not because I needed it. It’s really about mind; so long I don’t think about it, I feel fine. The only difference I notice recently is that I need to eat a lot, especially fruit/ vegetable. Here are some of the fruits that make me forget about smoking.

Another challenge I’m facing right now is my yearly IPPT test. My test date is on 23rd May meaning I left with1 week to train. Why so unprepared, is because I’m such a forgetful chap that I forgot to book it before my birthday. The chances of me passing the 2.4km run seem relatively slim, so slim the even my regular running Nike shoes gave up on me!

Singapore traffic wardens caught in the act

I have my fair share of parking tickets but what if traffic wardens themselves parked their bike illegally, who gave them tickets? The percentage of ‘what if’ seems to be increasingly high recently with pictures taken and posted on the net. With a camera-phone on hand, the public could play a part giving ticket to those unscrupulous traffic wardens.

‘Members of the public who wish to provide information on traffic violations can call the Traffic Police hotline at 1800 547 1818.’

So what/ who stipulate the valid reasons for a traffic warden to park their bike illegally for 15 minutes? The truth is there are just no valid reasons for any law enforcers to break the rules even for just 5 minutes or whatever good excuses you might have under your badge.

Freak commercial on Channel 5 (NSFW)

Definitely another freaking tv commercial (tvc) airing on channel 5 (worst than Telly-Tubbies). This time is the Cadbury chocolate’s TVC and be warned, is sick! The concept evolved humans and everything around them are made of chocolate. The family of 4 (father, mother, boy and girl) went on an excursion, some freak museum, when one of the boy start breaking the arm of the statue of Venus (make of chocolate, of course) and start eating her only arm while the father looks and smile (creepy). Next they went on leaning tower of pizza, girl start eating the corner of the tower. Father smiles again (more creepy). The expression on the parents' face to their kids are so physcio that signal ‘hey, I’m gona eat you when we get home' (literally, no ‘sexually’ pun intended). Well, if they can eat everything around them, what makes you think that won’t each other? This is one of the 4 TVCs on channel 5 and by far took my imagination to a higher ground.

What the hell you are doing when you are 16 years old? From what I recalled, I had been ‘networking’ too much at Far East Plaza. After reading that Aodhan Cullen founded StatCounter.com when he was just 16 years old and named the Young IT Person Of The Year at the ICT Execellen Awards, I really felt that I have wasted my youth. (Damn Far East Plaza#^$(#!^#^@

Statcounter serve more than as 1.3 million webmasters and tracking a total of 9 billion pageviews per month. This ‘dude’ is a genius, today he is 24 years old and he own a pagerank 10 website - StatCounter (even Microsoft’s official website only has a pagerank of 9) Guess he’s one of those who practice, Don’t blog for money, sell the idea of blogging for money. Sadly most Singapore's bloggers still believe in blogging for money.

Maybe I should develop something like that as well, hmm..spermcounter.

The value of faith

Recently I have questions on faith. How do I measure faith? Faith is often misinterpreted as belief. We are face with different adversary and disappointment in our journey. Who should we turn to or what should we do? Should we believe in God’s help or just tell ourselves “God help those who help themselves”. Funny thing is that my cell leader suddenly drops me an email and I took this opportunity to ask him. What is faith? This is what he replied me; (PS; this is not something that I would write often, please take it with a pinch of salt.)

"For example, if a married man chooses to visit prostitutes and he continues this habit despite asking his wife's forgiveness. Then 1 day he found out that he contracted HIV despite all the government warnings. The HIV becomes full blown AIDS in a few years. His pending death is the consequence he has to pay although his wife might still forgive and take care of him till he dies.
Same goes for us. We are forgiven but we will still have to live with the consequences of our actions. We reap what we sow.
Faith is often misinterpreted as belief. Faith requires a commitment to obey on the part of the faithful, belief does not. Unbelief in God, according to the bible, is sin.

For e.g. An old lady believes that the elevator can bring her to a higher floor with little effort because her children have been telling her that. Take note, Google has officially announce that it is against Google policy for anyone to artificially boost their link, ranks and hits by joining 3rd parties exchange website. If you think by channeling traffic to your blog thus increased your earning from AdSense, think again. To be a Media Sales Manager, you need to have at least a min qualification of MBA and 8 years of experiences. Have you ever considered, who are the 'engineers' checking your blog before releasing those fat cheques to you. Cheap tricks don’t get pass Google.

While most Singaporeans are debating about the ministers pay hike; there are questions we have to ask ourselves. Does the pay hike going to take a percentage off your monthly salaries or are you seeing red. Are you concern about the instabilities of the economy or the integrity of our ministers? Is the problem emotional or logical? Think about it...

Put this aside and look at something more intriguing;

How to design your blog without any knowledge of HTML or design experiences ;). There has been ample information on SEO and how to generate money from your blog. The missing part is how to make your blog looks like a designer’s blog or at least have the million dollars looks. Since there are only limited designs in blogger template and if none of them suit your taste. This might be handy. In the gallery section, you could choose from hundred over free designs embedded with the code. Also do check out the website template if you are thinking of changing the looks of your personal site. You just have to copy and paste over HTML tab, preview it until you are all set to go.

Whatever reasons motivate you to blog, hope this will help. Lets build a stronger base of blogs’ community, hopefully to boast Singapore economy hence another round of pay increment to our dear ministers.

Finally installed my pfingo (pfingo = phone + finger + Internet + go, hahaha) into my desktop and more importantly installed to my mobile phone (free calls, yeah!!!) Since this is a trial version, I shall look forward to more improvement. And yes, I do love the cool logo.

Here’s my 2 cents worth of reviews on Pfingo;
1; Received an confirmation email from the trial pfingo.
2; Log in and register.
3; Figure out which one to go first. pfingo Mail, pfingo Talk or pfingo Active.

4; Start with pfingo Mail - Trying to configure all my emails account into pfingo,quite easy. Just like any webmail, go to POP3 mail setting.
4/5 on user-friendly

5; pfingo Talk - Getting through multiplier layers before successfully downloaded the ‘softphone’ can be quite challenging. The userguide in pdf format could have done it in a way that has a hyperlink to every steps rather than just opening a new page on the instructions. You have to close and open the pdf file every time you need help on the instructions. Once you downloaded the softphone, you need to re-configure your mobile phone. Again, refer back to userguide. Did I mention that you have to check if you phone is compatible.(e.g. you need to download the latest Nokia’s software unless you are using the latest web enable phone)

6; pfingo Active - Downloading is easier but still multiplier layers as well. Check your mobile phone if it’s compatible and with the upgraded software. Once you download your Desktop client and mobile client, half the job is done. Now you need to synchronize your email, your phone, and whole lot of stuff. Now you seem to be lost in the process. Let go back to overview and refresh again ;p

The thing about new technology or VoIP is to make life easier and mobile (and not complicate life hence I emphasize a lot on user-friendliness). Yes, I do give credit to Starhub for launching pfingo and I do look forward to many upgrading works to be done. In order to attract more subscribers and enlarge this territory, the process must appeal to everyone and not just the I.T savvy people.

NB: Did I mention that I was given only SGD20 credits.

VoIP a smart way to call

There is this trend moving towards the telecom industries and changing the way we use internet. Companies like Singtel and Starhub are getting ready to launch their Triple Play. Triple Play is a marketing term for the provisioning of the three services: High Speed Internet, television (Video on Demand/ IPTV or regular broadcast) and telephone service over a single broadband or land lines connection.

While doing some simple research, you will find that Starhub is launching the Pfingo. This is an IP-based technology that delivers services such as internet, out-going/ in-coming calls (VoIP), SMS and all any IP capable devices all under one pricing. Similarly, Singtel is getting ready to launch their IPTV (part of Triple Play). By subscribing to either one of the services providers, using the same source of internet streaming, you will be able to watch movies/VOD, making calls and surfing the net, this is the next evolution internet usage.

So what is VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and how it benefits consumers? Imagine, using an internet service phone (e.g. Nokia N95, 3G phone), you can make out-going calls, received incoming calls or even sms by just paying a flat fee on your internet subscription. Forget about your mobile plans that stipulated cost for each calls depending what time you made (0.20c during peak hrs, 0.10c during off peak hrs). With VoIP what you pay is your internet subscription fees (price for VoIP is not available at this moment). Just think about the benefits for VoIP;

• Incoming phone calls can be automatically routed to your VoIP phone, regardless of where you are connected to the network. Take your VoIP phone with you on a trip, and wherever you connect to the Internet, you can receive incoming calls.

• Calling friends from overseas or receiving calls from overseas with no additional charges. No more expensive oversea calling bills.

• Users of Instant Messenger based VoIP services can also travel anywhere in the world and make and receive phone calls.

• VoIP phones can integrate with other services available over the Internet, including video conversation, message or data file exchange in parallel with the conversation, audio conferencing, managing address books and passing information about whether others (e.g. friends or colleagues) are available online to interested parties.

The quality and overall reliability of the phone connection is entirely reliant upon the quality, reliability, and speed of the Internet connection which it is using. IDA has announced the plans for the Next-Generation National Broadband Networks, which promises speeds of 1Gbs (10 times faster than now). Press released. With the right infrastructure ready, VoIP will definitely take off especially with the land area of 697.2 square kilometers’ (269.1 sq mi).

New technologies create new media opportunities

New technologies are changing the media in Singapore and naturally better ways of advertising. The Straits Times recently wrote an article (27 March 2007) on MDA wants overhaul as new services such as IPTV gain prominence. MDA’s stand is to make sure the rules keep up with the fast-changing media landscape as new technologies gain popularity. MDA’s press-released

So what is this new technology that created so much attention and how is IPTV changing the media. A better understanding of what is IPTV would give us a clearer picture.

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system where a digital-television service is delivered using the Internet Protocol over a network infrastructure, which may include delivery by a boardband or land lines (telephone lines) connection. IPTV uses a two-way digital broadcast signal sent through a switched telephone or cable network by way of a broadband connection and a set-top box programmed with software (much like a cable or DSS box) that can handle viewer requests to access to many available media source. IPTV is typically supplied by a broadband operator using a closed network infrastructure. This closed network approach is in competition with the delivery of TV content over the public Internet. This type of delivery is widely called TV over Internet or Internet Television. In businesses, IPTV may be used to deliver television content over corporate LANs and business networks. Perhaps a simpler definition of IPTV would be television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional formats and cabling, is received by the viewer through the technologies used for computer networks.

Digital television has several advantages over traditional analog TV, the most significant being that digital channels take up less bandwidth space. This means that digital broadcasters can provide more digital channels in the same space, provide High-Definition digital service, or provide other non-television services such as pay-multimedia services or interactive services. Digital television also permits special services such as multicasting (more than one program on the same channel) and electronic program guides. The sale of non-television services may provide an additional revenue source. As well, digital television often has a superior image, improved audio.

Because IPTV uses standard networking protocols, it promises lower costs for operators and lower prices for users. Using set-top-boxes with broadband Internet connections, video can be streamed to households more efficiently than current coaxial cable. ISPs are upgrading their networks to bring higher speeds and to allow multiple High Definition TV channels.

The IP-based platform offers significant advantages, including the ability to integrate television with other IP-based services like high speed Internet access and VoIP. A switched IP network also allows for the delivery of significantly more content and functionality. In a typical TV or satellite network, using broadcast video technology, all the content constantly flows downstream to each customer, and the customer switches the content at the set-top box. The customer can select from as many choices as the telecomms, cable or satellite company can stuff into the “pipe” flowing into the home.

A switched IP network works differently. Content remains in the network, and only the content the customer selects is sent into the customer’s home. That frees up bandwidth, and the customer’s choice is less restricted by the size of the “pipe” into the home. This also implicates that the customer's privacy could be compromised to a greater extent than is possible with traditional TV or satellite networks

IPTV covers both live TV (multicasting) as well as stored video (Video-on-demand, VOD). Video on demand (VOD) systems allow users to select and watch video content over a network as part of an interactive television system. VOD systems either "stream" content, allowing viewing in real time, or "download" it in which the program is brought in its entirety to a STB before viewing starts. The latter is more appropriately termed "store and forward". The majority of cable and telco based VOD systems use the streaming approach, whereby a user buys or selects a movie or television program and it begins to play on the television set almost instantaneously

This evolution of watching tv/movies is going to change the life of many. As I mentioned in my opening statement, IPTV is going to change the ways of advertising in media. With IPTV addressable advertising, you are reaching out to your target audiences, the age, their income, they hobbies, their favorite show, etc. Ever wonder how banks able to do such a great marketing jobs on their credit card through direct marketing? Same theory. IPTV is an advertiser's dream. It facilitates the ultimate in targeted personalized advertising where viewers see adverts (oh yes, and content) tailored to their specific Internet/registration profiles. Movies distributors such as 20 Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures would be keen to use IPTV as a platform to launch their new movies released. Just as what US is doing right now. The opportunities are unlimited.

Whilst viewers are watching the same content, the ads that are played out to them can be varied according to demographics, shopping habits and personal preferences, so that advertising becomes a lot more relevant. Viewers do not have to radically change their television-watching habits to benefit from well targeted IPTV advertising. Television viewing can still remain a 'lean-back' activity - in contrast with the more dynamic process of using a PC. However, it is likely that TV ads of the future will have little in common with those being broadcast today. For viewers, channels that come through their IPTV system will simply provide ads that are more relevant and engaging. But behind the scenes in the media industry, there will be a seismic shift with production of creative, pricing structures and accessibility of the ad avail all undergoing a revolution. From my prediction, with the launch of IPTV, Mediacorp and SPH would suffer a great lost of advertising revenue.

My questions; Are Singaporeans ready for IPTV, is the infrastructure ready, understanding of IPTV and when is 1Gbs be ready. Would it be a repeat case of first commercial VOD service was launched in Hong Kong around 1990. The technology was not mature, video CD were much cheaper, and pay TV was not common in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Telecom lost a large amount of money and the service was acquired by Pacific Century Cyberworks in 2000, which subsequently discontinued it. Everything to be unveils soon.

Wedding Bells part II

I have attended many weddings in the past, mostly friends, colleagues or relative. For this wedding -Jeremy & Gerlin, I am truly touched. Not only I know this groom for many many years, we really bonded. We got into lots of trouble and get away with lots of trouble..Seeing him getting married, still very unbelievable to me right now.

So Congratulations to Jeremy & Gerlin, on your wedding and thank you for inviting me to be involved in the preparations.

Talk about wedding dinner, it is tiring!! Cant imagine what's going through in the head of the groom and bride. A million and one things can and do go wrong. Like guests come in late, M.C (me) screwed up the speech, last minute getting in more barrels of beers, blackout, best men fight with bride-maids and forgetting your speech or drunk before the dinner ends.

But what really matter is, you love each other and you finally got married. Wedding dinner is just a ceremony, a commercial ceremony and you only need to do it once(for some twice). Once during the gulf war, the President of USA, and the Prime Ministers of UK and Singapore were traveling on a warship that was cruising near S.Arabia. The 3 were talking about how brave their soldiers were; their discussion soon turned into an argument where each wanted to prove the bravery of their own soldiers.

The Pres. of USA said, "let me show u what is guts", where upon he called his Colonel and said "Jump into the sea and swim 3 rounds around this ship!". The Colonel replied "Anything for Uncle Sam, Sir", jumped into the shark infested sea and swam 3 rounds around the ship, with the sharks chasing him like mad! After the successful 3 rounds, the Colonel came up to the deck and said, "I did it for Uncle Sam Mr. President!”. The proud US President replied "That's what I call guts!”

The Prime Minister of UK was pissed. He had to show. He called his 3-star General and said "General, jump into the sea and swim 10 rounds around this ship!". The General replied "Anything for the Queen, Sir". Immediately jumped into the shark infested sea and swam 10 rounds around the ship, with the sharks chasing him like mad. Singaporeans are unique and our government knows it. We believe wearing shorts and slippers to Orchard Road (town) is cool but carrying plastic bag is not. We believe using tissue packet to reserve seats at the hawker’s center is fine but blowing nose on the tissue in the public is ‘da glam’ – shameful. We believe bitch slapping the seats before seating down and parents would tell their kids that ‘BaYi’ would catch them if they are naughty. We are the 'shinning one' who caught Bausch & Lomb’s mistake and aired it all over the world.

And yes loh, we hor have created a language hor that only Singaporeans would understand loh. So what is a Singaporean? I am not sure but one thing for sure, I am a patriot and proud to be a Singaporean LOH.

Chinese New Year = visiting my mum

Bitch, it is here again. No, i am not referring to my mum and don't be rude. Should say some nice things during CNY. Ok, I am developing a personality’s breakdown and talking to myself just because of CNY. Telling myself one week of ‘Gong Gong Qiang’ and that's it, once a year, 7 days, nothing to fear.

I don’t know what is it about CNY, but I reckon it is the most whined about festival in Singapore. Almost every blogger in Singapore will blog about his/her CNY and almost everyone will carry 2 mandarin oranges (why not 2 apples or 2 water-melon or 2 bananas) you can see practically every Chinese I know ‘Kao Pei’ about CNY and how they wished that they could get away from it.

So what are the ‘things’ that make people hate about CNY? Let us find out…

1) Those pretentious relatives that pretend that they care about u
2) Those stupid questions that your relative asked …
3) Those awkward moment while sitting with your relative… nothing to say just faking a smile like an idiot
4) The stupid Gong Gong Qiang music that play over and over in every bloody channel available in Singapore
5) Every bloody channel showing Gong Gong Qiang show
6) You can never get a cab on the road. Taxis are abducted by aliens….
7) All kopi tiam are closed, you can only eat from hotels, restaurants, KFC, Pizza and Mac

It’s been said that Fate chooses our parents/relatives and we choose our friends, and perhaps that’s crux of the CNY dilemma- yes, it’s time for family reunions, but how many of us are actually comfortable with our families?

Every year I have mixed feeling towards CNY. I feel sort of vulnerable and maybe that is why I hate CNY. There is nothing I can do unless I have the power to control minds. The only thing that I am glad during CNY is that I still have a group of people who truly care about me, and they are not my family.

Drama in Advertising

"Singapore Airlines has selected eight agencies to pitch for its estimated $100 million creative business, and incumbent Batey is believed to be one of them.
R3 Asia Pacific principal Goh Shu Fen confirmed the selected agencies will be given three weeks to prepare for the pitch, but would not confirm the shortlisted agencies.

Marketing believes the eight are Batey, BatesAsia, DDB, Leo Burnett, Publicis, Saatchi & Saatchi, TBWA and Y&R.

The agencies which did not make the shortlist include Euro RSCG, Grey Global Group, and TNBT"

Gosh, the entire advertising industry is buzzing with excitement after the news that Singapore Airlines is up for pitch. It has been what, 35 years since it appointed Batey? Talk about loyalty.

Hats off to Batey for holding on so long, and keeping a steady relationship with their client, and weathering storms together. It’s a shame there’s a chance they may lose the business considering they only have Metro left as a major client but a review after so many years is frankly overdue on SIA’s part. Same applied for the agency that handling Army for 8 years..is time to wake up and smell the fresh air outside. Gone are the smell of sweet roses.
